Some aspects of Vietnamese culture cannot be translated into English through words alone. For example, the word thương [th-uuh-oo-ng] is a common Vietnamese expression used to show affection to others, a mix between love and like – which has no direct translation to English. This points to the way relationships are valued in Vietnamese culture in a unique way.
Through a collection of comics visualising personal stories voiced by Vietnamese Australians, Thương is a print publication that allows readers to immerse themselves in a new understanding of a word that is deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture. This project creates a doorway into the stories and culture behind a language, from a personal perspective. The project uses personal narratives as an alternative way to translate and unpack a language to a wider audience.
