Other Echoes is borne partly from my own personal struggle with my cultural identity and the persistent feeling of being never quite ‘Australian’, but also never quite ‘Chinese’. This project taps into this widespread existential condition of being ‘neither/nor’ but also ‘both/and’ prevalent amongst diasporic immigrant identities in Australia, to explore the experience of occupying the space in-between Otherness and Belonging through a decolonial lens.
Using design techniques traditionally dismissed as craft, including quilting and embroidery, Other Echoes consists of a website, a quilt and a dissertation which propose new representational strategies for self-making derived from metaphor.
